Water bag
A cost efficient solution for Transporting Fresh Water around the World
General

MTI has been working on the development of water transportation with bags since NYK invested in some of the operations carried out by Nordic Water Supply ASA (NWS). The combination of an economically constructed filmy bag and a tug with low operating costs offers water transportation with minimum cost.

Features
MTI waterbags have advantages over other means of water supply, such as tankers, pipelines, or desalination.

Lower investment costs
Lower operational costs
Higher flexibility that meets changes in demand by offering:

Optimal logistics and various volumes
Fast installation and shut down
Examples

Water transportation from Turkey to Cyprus
During 1998-2002, the first large-scale water transportation in the world was performed with waterbag of sizes up to thirty-five thousand tons from Turkey to Cyprus (60 miles).

Product FAQ

Q: Tell me about the range of services.
A: Basically, the range of services is the transportation of water, including loading and discharging. Customers are responsible for the arrangement of land facilities, operations, and water.
Q: Is the waterbag itself on sale?
A: Generally, the waterbag itself is not on sale. This is because the operation and maintenance of waterbags require specific techniques, and if customers conduct them, sufficient quality cannot be guaranteed. The whole transportation service, including the operation and maintenance of waterbag, is the service we offer.
Q: Does the quality of water change during transportation?
A: It depends on the transportation condition. So an assessment of quality change is completed prior to the transportation. The film used for waterbags is coated so as to do no harm to drinking water, so that it doesn't affect the water quality.
Q: Are there any possibilities for the waterbag to be torn during the transportation?
A: The film used for waterbags is one originally developed based on the study of forces on the waterbag during the transportation. Therefore, the waterbag cannot be torn. It is possible for a waterbag to get damaged if it hits a vessel or wharf; however, those kinds of accidents can be avoided by safe operations.
