Energy-Saving Hull Appendage: MT-FAST

The hull appendage MT-FAST is an energy-saving device that greatly reduces fuel consumption. Its multiple blades are fitted ahead of the ship's propeller to reduce the swirl generated by propeller revolutions and thereby enhance propulsion efficiency.

Summary

Against the background of environmental hazards and rising fuel costs, we have developed the hull appendage MT-FAST as part of our initiative to reduce fuel consumption. MT-FAST was named by combining the initials of its co-developers, MTI and Tsuneishi Holdings, and its characteristics-Falcate, Attachable, and Stator (trademark registration).
The hull appendage MT-FAST, by virtue of its compactness and the ease with which it is fitted, is expected to prove highly effective in fuel savings.

Features

MT-FAST fits multiple blades ahead of the ship's propeller and thereby reduces both the swirl generated by propeller revolutions and the energy lost in that swirl. Tests have demonstrated that it reduces fuel consumption by about 4%. It can be fitted to both ships under construction and existing ships.

Typical Cases

It is already installed on a woodchip carrier operated by Nippon Yusen Kaisha Ltd. (NYK), a ship that entered service in June 2008. The number of MT-FAST-equipped vessels, mainly bulk carriers operated by NYK or other members of the NYK Group, will be increased. Simultaneously, improvements to the new product will be made with information obtained from fuel-saving tests at sea. (Patent pending)

FAQ

Q.MT-FAST is said to provide an energy-saving effect of 3% to 5%, but specifically how much can fuel and CO2 be reduced?
A.The energy-saving effect of MT-FAST varies with the hull form, but we can assume an average effect of 4%, meaning a fuel saving of 300 metric tons and a CO2 cutback of about 1,000 metric tons a year for a woodchip carrier.
Q.You said the energy-saving effect would vary with the hull form, but what hull form would show a more significant effect or, conversely, what hull form would show a less significant effect?
A.MT-FAST tends to be more effective on pudgy hull forms. Thus, it is less effective on woodchip carriers, but still promises fuel savings of around 4%.
