NYK Globalizing Its Transport Consulting Work Forms Global CCAT(Global CCAT: Container Cargo Advisory Team)

June 2, 2005

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) recently transferred its Container Cargo Advisory Team (CCAT), which had provided consulting within a department under the former Domestic Follow-up Group of Container Transport Operation, to Monohakobi Technology Institute, a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK. The team has been launched as Global CCAT.

CCAT provides support for domestic sales by giving guidance on cargo stacking for safe transport and advice on preventing damage that is directly in tune with the work site. On the other hand, MTI develops ship and logistics technologies while also providing technical consulting services internationally. The objective of this transfer is to integrate the domestic sales support functions with the international and technical support functions. The company aims to advance safer and greater quality transport through global consulting on cargo stacking and damage prevention. This move is also a part of NYK's medium-term management plan, "New Horizon 2007."

MTI previously tied up with CCAT to study and research the effect that impacts and temperature changes have on cargo during transport. MTI applied the multi cargo simulator (MCS) to not only resolve various problems during cargo transport but also worked to develop new technologies that improve transport quality. This decision to integrate CCAT, with its direct line to the work site, and MTI, a specialist in technological development, is expected to lead to quicker research and development that is more in tune with the work site and customer needs.

NYK continues to carry out onboard tests and strives to further enhance efficiency and reliability, aiming to make the equipment available for commercial distribution within 2006.
