SOx, NOx

Development of Solutions for Environmental Regulations

Regulations on NOx (nitrogen oxides) and SOx (sulfur oxides) emissions from operating ships, considered to be one of the causes of acid rain, have been gradually strengthened. There is little time to consider countermeasures to meet the new criteria. MTI is jointly studying the countermeasures with ship equipment manufacturers and with support of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Singapore government, and Class NK.

  • R&D on SOx scrubber system: We work to comply with SOx emission regulations outside the ECA emission limits after 2020 or 2050. We will improve the sophistication of the deployment technology to simplify and downsize the system.
  • Reducing NOx emissions by using main engine EGR (exhaust-gas recirculation): We are jointly researching this with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., as a funding project of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

MTI will continue efforts, ahead of international regulations, in the research and development of beneficial environmental measures.
