Cargo Hold Maintenance Tool

Devices for Use in Cargo Holds of Handy Bulkers

We have two kinds of devices for use in holds of handy bulkers: Mente-san and Rakuraku Ladder Noboru-kun.

1. Mente-san

Mente-san is a device for inspecting the condition of outer panels or structural members safely. Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK) issued a statement of approval for Mente-san as an alternative “permanent means of access” (PMA) that meets SOLAS* requirements.

Mente-san can be easily assembled and installed by combining widely available ladder and scaffold parts. It can be set up on either side of a ship, and ship size does not matter. Inspectors can carry out inspection work speedily, properly, and safely. Mente-san can be assembled and disassembled easily. (Utility Model Patent registered, Design Registration accepted)

2. Rakuraku Ladder Noboru-kun

To date, various methods have been employed to conduct post-cleaning inspections of hard-to-reach areas prior to cargo loading. These methods include the use of fixed ladders, scaffolding, and baskets suspended from cranes. But these methods all require a great deal of time, labor, and expense.
The new ladder was developed to make this work safe and easy. Its design, which combines a ladder with a wheeled platform, helps to make work more efficient. (Utility Model Patent registered, Design Registration accepted)

*SOLAS: The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea of 1974
*Handy bulkers: Bulk carriers of about 23,000 to 58,000 deadweight tons
