Support for ship cybersecurity enhancement

Recent developments in ICT technology have led to constant connectivity to the Internet on ships, thereby expanding the communication capabilities of onboard and shipboard equipment. As a result, the risk of cyber-attacks—such as malware infections or unauthorized access to shipboard systems—has been increasing. In response, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has requested that shipowners and operators implement comprehensive cybersecurity measures in accordance with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, as part of their Safety Management Systems, by the first annual review of the Document of Compliance (DOC) after January 2021.

In response to the above, our company is working to establish a system for the early detection and prevention of cyber incidents by conducting penetration tests and other simulated attacks on ships. These measures aim to accurately assess cyber threats and enable centralized monitoring across the entire fleet.
In addition, to build a system that enables swift response and recovery in collaboration with relevant organizations in the event of an incident, we continue to support the establishment of cybersecurity response teams for NYK vessels, assist with the implementation of security tools, and gather information on cybersecurity trends worldwide.

Furthermore, the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has mandated compliance with UR E26 (and E27) for vessels with construction contracts signed on or after July 2024, with the aim of ensuring cyber resilience in newbuildings.
In response, we are working in collaboration with various domestic and international organizations to clarify risk assessment criteria throughout the entire shipbuilding process and operational lifecycle of NYK vessels. We are also establishing operational management systems, supporting the development of crew training programs, and promoting information sharing and coordinated efforts.
