Decarbonization
Background
In the 2023 edition of its GHG reduction strategy, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the goal of reducing carbon intensity 40% by 2030 compared to the 2008 baseline, reducing absolute GHG emissions by 70% by 2040, and aiming for net zero emissions by around 2050. In addition, the EU is leading the world in introducing carbon pricing in the maritime sector. The EU-ETS (European Emission Trading System) started in 2024, and the carbon pricing system called Fuel EU Maritime also began in 2025. Furthermore, the IMO is also considering GHG emission reduction measures at the global level from both technical and economic perspectives.
NYK announced the NYK Group Decarbonization Story in 2023, and in the story, the company set a goal of achieving net zero by 2050, meaning that both the reduction of GHG emissions and the removal of these gases from atmosphere will be taken into account. . With this background, MTI is designing measures to reduce GHG emissions, implementing initiatives to make appropriate decisions, and promoting R&D from both hardware and software perspectives.’
